We can buy untreated wood furniture in order to customize it in many ways. Its biggest advantage is that they are easily adaptable to any decoration.
But you may not know how to start working with them, and the final results are not always what you expected.
So today's post is a compilation of tips to customize furniture without fear.

PREPARAR LA MADERA
PREPARING THE WOOD

First of all, you will have to sand well in the direction of the grain. I use sandpaper for manicure extra fine and also steel wool. This step is important because it looks ugly to paint over a surface with imperfections.

After sanding, if the wood is very dry you can apply linseed oil to nourish it. The color will change softly and gives the wood a healthy look.
You have to let the furniture dry thoroughly several hours.

If you want to stain the wood, you can do it after applying the linseed oil, because if you stain it before on a very dry wood, the stain will be absorbed unevenly.

The oil may cause that the wood absorb less amount of dye, however you can give several and successive layers, or even combine two colours in two different applicationsin order to get warmer hues. (As I did with the wooden floor of the Herbarium)

After sanding, the wood has very open pores. It is necessary to protect the wood with transparent primer or wood feeler, applying thin coats and sanding between them very gently to remove any possible imperfection.

MUEBLES CON ACABADO A LA CERA
WAX FINISH FURNITURE

If you want a natural finish to see the grains and the wood condition, wax finish is perfect. After following the previous steps, you can use colorless beeswax or add bitumen judaicum for a more aged appearance. In both cases, you have to polish it vigorously with a woolen cloth to get all the wax shine.

MUEBLES BLANQUEADOS
BLEACHED FINISH FURNITURE

This is pieces lets see the wood surface and its grain. They have a slightly dusty look.
After sanding perfectly and applying acrilic paint on the surface, I recomend white or a pastel colour, remove it before it dries with a cotton cloth.
You can finish it polishing with colorless wax, and sprinkling talcum powder.

MUEBLES PINTADOS EN LISO
PLAIN AND SMOOTH FINISHED FURNITURE

After sanding the wood and applying primer or Alkyl (and have sanding between layers) you can paint the furniture.
I recommend acrilic painting because its easy cleaning. Remember that it is better to apply several thin layers than a thick one.

You can find the matte paint, satin or gloss. I do not recommend the last one, because it accentuates the surface irregularities.
I personally like to use matte paintings, because the result has a discreet shine.

MUEBLES DECORADOS
DECORATED FURNITURE

You can also opt for more decorative and historical finishes. I recommend you to make a good collection of images that can serve as inspiration and help. I keep everything in Pinterest folders since I never know when I'll need them.

Start with simple projects, and do not worry if you make mistakes, because there is always a good solvent to erase and start again.
This is the first piece of furniture I painted. As you can see, the motifs are many short lines arranged symmetrically. I used an indelible golden marker pen.

If you still do not dare to paint directly on the wood, look for small tricks such as using tracing paper or paint it with a stencil. You can doit by yourselves or for example you can use some that are sold for scrapbooking.
This furniture is decorated in the interior as well as outside has a pickling to the wax, which I also explain in this entry.

You also have the different options to transfer images to furniture like decoupages, transfer liquids, collages, etc. I have not used it much, but I have done something in the kitchen furniture of my doll house.

These are some furniture that I have decorated inspired by the designs of Peter Hunt.

When you feel more secure, you can try to make some chinoiserie decoration.
I did a long time ago this desk and in this link you have the whole process. The dresser belongs to my scene "Mercedes Music Room"

MUEBLES LACADOS
LACQUERED FURNITURE

If you look for a lacquered appearance, with perfectly smooth and glossy surfaces, I recommend spray paint (but always after sanding, priming and re-sanding).
I use the matte finish, because it has a light shine and looks good.

A mechanical decapé method is using sandpaper. If we want a piece of furniture to look like if it  was painted once and its surface was wore out, we will sand it in those areas more susceptible to friction, and we will get the colour of the wood under these layer.

Another similar method is to paint first with a colour, set it with Alkyl or varnish and when it is dry, paint with another colour. When we sand it softly we can get the colour below, with very interesting contrast effects.

Apart from chemical paint strippers, which basically serve to remove any paint or varnish. There is a method for the decapé effect without sanding.

We can obtain similar results with this process but with more radical effects, as if paint had flaked off the surfaces.

To get it, after sanding the surfaces and staining the wood, apply beeswax in certain areas. Immediately, paint with acrylic paint and when it begins to be dry, remove the wax with a cloth, leaving that part unpainted.

PAN DE ORO Y PAN DE PLATA
GOLD AND SILVER LEAF

Another decorative option that deserves to give it a try is the gold leaf, silver, and endless of metalic colors.
I only did once with a desk belonging to one of my first scenes

And here you have the link to the tutorial

FINALIZAR
ENDING

Whatever the finish you choose (except bleached and lacquered furniture), I recommend you to finish them with wax. The furniture wil be very soft to touch and sight
If you want to add Judea bitumen to wax, be careful, because it changes the final colour.

You can also apply different patinas with eyeshadows to get different aged finishes than with the Judea bitumen.

For those peaces of furniture more elaborate or elegant, there are metallic patinas waxes which are usually given in the profiles of the furniture to highlight its lines.

BORRÓN Y CUENTA NUEVA
LET'S TRY AGAIN

Yo utilizo gel decapante “Cinco aros”. Tened mucho cuidado pues es fortísimo. Usad siempre guantes, mascarilla y gafas protectoras.
Después debéis lijar y volver a aplicar tapaporos...y a empezar otra vez :-)

And...what happends if we don'tlike the result?, Well, you can always start again by removing the paint.
I use gel paint stripper. Be very carefuly using it because it is very strong. You know, protect your skin and eyes.
After removing the paint, sand the surface again and apply wood feeler or primer and letś try again! :-)

And that's all for now, I hope you do not be afraid of experiment by yourself, you will see how your furniture looks more real and vivid than ever.

A big hug and thank you for being there.
